Titans 2008Titans Award 2008
A new edition for the new Montréal Science Centre!

The new innovations: technologies full of possibilities!

iPod

Are you 16 years of age and under and does technology intrigue you, excite you, bring up all kinds of questions?

Take part in our new contest Titans Award 2008* and vote for one of the four innovations competing this year.

You could win an iPod touch!

To participate, you must fill out an entry form and make a choice:
Which one of the following innovations seems to you the most useful to our society and/or to the planet?

1) Water Purifier

  • A very efficient method of killing viruses, parasites and bacteria present in the water of pools, spas and in the drinking water for households, hunting lodges and campgrounds.
  • No chemicals such as chlorine are involved: the purifier sends an electric current through the water to disinfect it.
  • It also eliminates the bad tastes and odours that can sometimes make tap water unappealing.

2) Hydrogen Injection System

  • A system that allows the engine in trucks, cars and other vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines to burn fuel faster, more efficiently and more completely.
  • An electric current passes through a water-filled cell, producing oxygen and hydrogen; the hydrogen is then injected into the engine’s combustion chamber.
  • Production of pollutants: - 50 %; fuel consumption: - 10 %; increased engine power.

3) Instrumented Mountain Bike

  • Computer science used to design stronger, lighter and faster bikes.
  • Sensors record some 35,000 bits of data per second from instrumented bikes to analyze the intensity and direction of shocks impacting the bike.
  • Computer modelling is accelerating the development of new high performance prototypes, ready for testing.

4) 3D Biomechanical Attachment System

  • A technology used to diagnose knee problems following an injury, determine the most effective treatment and assess its effects.
  • A computer creates a 3D representation of the bones’ movement. Specialists can then observe the knee in action in real time and adjust the treatment.
  • Elite athletes will soon be using this technology to improve their performance.
