The Montréal Science Centre’s biggest event of the year was presented on Saturday, February 11, 2023… and what a tremendous success it was!
This 6th edition marked the return of its in-person programming and the event literally took over every one of the Centre’s exhibition halls. Nearly 3,600 visitors dropped by to explore different career opportunities in science and tech and take in some pretty exciting scientific demonstrations. Exhibitors, activity leaders, and visitors alike were full of smiles and had lots to talk about!
Over 30 activities geared towards young girls ages 6 and up and their families were presented:
- An extra special talk by Québec’s own aerospace engineer Farah Alibay wowed audiences with stories about piloting the rover Perseverance on Mars (presented in English and in French).
- An extra special demonstration of Spot, the world’s best-selling robot dog, was presented by Osedea.
- A career zone featured more than 15 exhibitors who spoke to visitors about their exciting fields.
- A series of hands-on workshops were led on everything from molecular gastronomy, robotics, and zero-waste balm making.
- A series of cool science and tech demos took place across all of the Centre’s exhibition halls.
- A number of Indigenous short films were also screened.
Visitors were invited to touch a human brain, make their own sanitizing hand gel, recognize marine mammals using virtual reality, walk around the space station, play with lab equipment… there was just so much to do, it’s hard to talk about them all here!
Much like every year since 2018, the Women and Girls of Science event is an opportunity to showcase the engagement of the Science Centre and its partners in promoting diversity in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). And all kinds of diversity… be it people of different genders, people of different ages, people of colour, and more!
All proceeds from the event went to the Montréal Science Centre Foundation which will allow it to reinvest them in the development of new exhibitions and school science programs. Just like Lavoisier’s Law of Conservation of Mass tells us: nothing is lost, nothing is created, oh but how everything is transformed!
