LIFEBOAT CHALLENGE WORKSHOP:

As part of the Women and Girls in Science event that took place on February 11, 2021, the Science Centre and UQAM’s Faculty of Science present a classroom workshop challenge and a contest!

>The Workshop Challenge

Create a prototype for a lifeboat, an idea originally invented in 1880 by a prolific woman inventor. Put your students’ creativity to work and watch them explore and invent! They’ll love it!

DOWNLOAD THE GUIDE

Here are some other fun ways to amp up the fun offered by this workshop:

  • Candy Challenge: Put your students to the test by asking them to see which lifeboat can carry the most candy… and then let them eat it! Note: For health and safety reasons, the Science Centre recommends that you use well sealed, individually wrapped, single-serving candies.
  • Bolts & Marble Challenge: Put as many bolts (or marbles) in the boat as there are students in the class… to symbolize how you were all in it together this year!
  • Target Challenge: Download this target, write in the grade level your class is about to finish, and watch your lifeboat reach it… to symbolize how you all made it through the year together!
  • Water Gun Challenge: Ask students to bring water guns and hold the challenge in the school yard. Ask them to propel their boats with their water gun jets!
  • Playlist Challenge: Make a playlist of your students’ favourite songs and use this as your soundtrack by using it as a time limit for the challenge!
  • Grad Challenge: Challenge your school’s graduating students to compete against a team of students from all other grades. Choose the challenge…! Which boat travels farthest? Which boat can handle the heaviest load?
