A New Mural by Élise Gravel to Celebrate Diversity!
As part of the Peaceful Morning event held on Sunday, September 17th, 2023, the Montréal Science Centre unveiled its newest social responsibility initiative: a mural celebrating diversity and inclusion by artist Élise Gravel!
Why a Mural About Diversity?
Since its very beginnings, the Centre has been clear about its commitment to social responsibility. It aims to be an inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free environment and has continually evolved in response to the needs of its visitors. This is what prompted a collaboration with Québec's own and well-known children's author and illustrator Élise Gravel to create a mural to help stir dialogue about diversity and celebrate the diversity that helps enrich our world. The author's books take on issues of diversity, consent, gender stereotypes and tolerance and made her the ideal partner for this creative collaboration.
"Our team is extremely proud to have been able to partner with Élise Gravel. This project allowed us to celebrate our shared values, all for the benefit of our visitors." - Cybèle Robichaud, Director, Montréal Science Centre
The mural has been on display since September 17th, 2023 on the first floor of the Science Centre near the universal washrooms and the changing room designed for those with multiple disabilities.
Peaceful Mornings: A Custom Experience for Visitors With Special Needs!
Peaceful Mornings were born from a desire to make the Science Centre as inclusive as possible while at the same time accommodating visitors with special needs. Held once every two months on a Sunday, Peaceful Morning events are a special time reserved for families with children with special needs.
During these morning events, stimuli and traffic are kept to a minimum to create a visit experience with the fewest barriers possible. A guide for those accompanying visitors with special needs was specially designed to help them discover the Centre’s facilities and plan their visit. What's more, films screened during these events have a 20-minute run time with reduced volume and dimmed lighting.
As an added bonus, the Peaceful Morning experience also features quiet areas right inside the exhibition halls where young visitors can take time for themselves on their own as they need.
The Science Centre's mission is to help visitors better understand science and technology and make it their own in an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone, without exception.
