Spiders – From Fear to Fascination

Dare to venture into the world of spiders!

Extended hours: Let these little marvels weave their way into your heart on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from June 27 to August 31 and enjoy a $5 discount on every admission offered exclusively at the Science Centre ticket office.

Forever seen as formidable and frightening, these extraordinary creatures aren’t really as dangerous as we think. Explore an immersive and amusing space that reveals the secrets —and the lighter side— of these enigmatic critters through interactive games, augmented reality, hundreds of preserved specimens, and over a dozen living species.

Get up close and personal with fascinating arachnids like the fishing spider that walks on water and the ogre faced spider that catches prey by… throwing a web! Learn to wiggle and dance just like a peacock spider trying to attract a mate. Discover how spiders detect danger (and dinner!) by the amount of vibrations they detect on their web. Chase away virtual spiders scrambling under your feet as you explore the remarkable lair of the cave-dwelling spiders. You can even colour in your very own spider and watch it come to life on a giant screen.

Come explore the superb skills of these amazing arthropods. Discover their diversity and biogeography, their wildly fascinating hunting techniques, and the surprising steel-like strength of spider silk. Face your fears and embrace the science behind these fascinating creatures that are quite likable despite their appearance and terrifying reputation. There’s so much to learn from these gnarly marvels of nature!

An exhibition developed by the Australian Museum & toured internationally by Flying Fish.
